Frequently Asked Questions

What does a Notary Public do?

A Notary Public verifies identity, witnesses signatures, administers oaths and affirmations, and certifies true copies of documents. Notarization helps confirm that documents are properly signed and can be relied upon by organizations in Canada and internationally.

What is the difference between a Notary Public and a Commissioner of Oaths?

A Commissioner of Oaths can administer oaths and affirmations for documents used within Ontario, while a Notary Public has broader authority, including notarizing documents for use outside Ontario or internationally and certifying true copies of documents.

What should I bring to my appointment?

You must bring:

  • Valid government-issued photo identification (such as a driver’s licence or passport)

  • The complete document (unsigned unless instructed otherwise)

  • Any additional supporting documents required for your matter

Can you give legal advice?

Notary services do not include legal advice unless specifically retained as a lawyer. We can explain the notarial process but cannot advise you on the legal contents of your document.

Can you notarize a document that is already signed?

In most cases, no. Documents must be signed in front of the Notary Public so they can properly witness the signature. If a document has already been signed, you may be required to sign it again in the notary’s presence.

How long does the process take?

Most notarization appointments are completed within 10 minutes. It depends on the number of documents and complexity. Being prepared with proper identification and complete documents will ensure a quick and smooth process.

Can you notarize documents for use outside Canada?
Yes. Notaries can notarize documents intended for international use. However, some countries may require additional steps such as authentication or legalization after notarization.
